Friends in the Music Business

Cursed Release Flyer

Last night was Cursed’s record release show for their latest album III: Architects of Troubled Sleep. I admittedly gave the album a listen about a month and a half ago when an unmastered version leaked, and it’s heavy.

Anyways, after making a quick dash into the Kinkos on Bloor to print off some flyers I arrived at the venue at the very beginning of Career Suicide’s set which was, in my opinion, perfect timing. I would later find out that my tardiness cost me a 1/85 hand numbered record release LP, which is pretty unfortunate.

Now admittedly, when I first moved to the city, I was never crazy about Career Suicide. Just wasn’t really my thing save for a song here or there. That was until Attempted Suicide came out. I honestly listen to it at least once a week still, almost two years after its release. And truthfully, their live show has always been entertaining. Now you’d never expect it from a band that has played together a total of 3 times in the last 5 months, but they were incredibly tight last night. They even had a new song called “I Took a Fairy to Cherry Beach,” which clocked in somewhere past the 3 minute mark, but never let up once.

After CS, DJ Mark Pesci spun a few tracks, and then Cursed took the stage a little bit early. Every time I see this band it’s like I’m discovering them for the first time. This could be because they seem to rarely play these days. I think the last time I saw them actually was the II record release, maybe once after that.

Either way, as expected, the set was fantastic. It was a good mix of songs from each record. And it was played loud as hell. They might be the loudest band in Toronto. For a smaller guy, Chris Colohan is a commanding presence on stage, and his vocal delivery is spot on. It really seems like he gets angrier with each release. They closed their set with the new song “Friends in the Music Business” and played it with two basses. You can imagine how that sounded. It’s a shame that they don’t play more often around Toronto, because they truly are one of the several bands that have helped define this city’s hardcore music community.

That said, they are playing basically everywhere in and around the Golden Horseshoe over the coming month, including next weekend’s Taken reunion. I’m gonna do my best to see them again. You should too.

Here are the dates:
03.28 Hamilton @ Casbah w/Taken (Reunion Show), VCM, HP, To The Lions
03.30 Toronto @ Sonic Boom (In-Store. Free w/NP Food Donation) 5PM
04.04 Ottawa @End Hits Records w/Riot Service. $10 8PM (407 Dalhousie)
04.04 Ottawa @End Hits Records – LATE SHOW w/Vatican Chainsaw Massacre
04.05 Montreal @ The BlackDot w/Black Ships, Barnburner, Kraken. $8
04.05 Montreal @ The BlackDot – LATE SHOW w/Bionic +1
04.06 Peterborough @ Underdog w/LivingDarkness, Eating Glass, Titan (9pm)
04.11 Windsor @ Coach & Horses w/Endless Blockade, XBrainiaX (19+)
04.12 London @ Wippet Lounge w/Endless Blockade, Nailsplitter, Black Ships, Midwives
04.13 Kitchener @ Cory’s House w/Endless Blockade, Black Ships, Father’s Day, VCM

From what I understand you can grab the new record on CD already in stores everywhere, and it should be arriving on vinyl to your local retailer any day now. Give it a listen.

say, do you know for sure if that career suicide song is fairy, or is it ferry? Big difference between the two.

I may have misunderstood, but Martin seemed to state that he meant “fairy”, but I’m sure it’s tongue in cheek.
