Obligatory Overview of the Past Year Post

2008 was a great year, or at least I think so. There were a number of standout releases, a number of great shows and it was, in general, an awesome year for music. On top of that, the Fucked Up Weekend DVD came out (if you haven’t bought one, you should), we put on over 30 shows and some of our locals, young and old, accomplished some serious business. Who knows what next year will hold? (We do. Kind of.)

I thought about giving a reason for each thing, but fuck that. It’s just a list. Considering this is a blog about hardcore, I only included hardcore records and the lists are unordered. Here it goes.

TOP 5 LOCAL ZINES

– I wish. Shoutouts to the Buffet of Plagues & Pains guys for doing one relatively consistently and to Lifers for putting out a thick full-size zine. Maybe next year will allow for this list. Start a zine!

5 BEST (HARDCORE RELATED) THINGS ABOUT 2008

– Hits and Misses.
– It being incredibly hard to nail down a top 10 list despite all the shit music (and there was a lot).
– The Adrift Clubhouse opening up.
– Hearing the Crow Record from last year.
– Radio Silence and my girlfriend allowing me to trick her into going to the gallery showing on our weekend in NY (and the sweet T-shirt I scored).

Honorable mention to Hoibak being bummed on not getting a TFS Crew Shirt.

5 WORST (HARDCORE RELATED) THINGS ABOUT 2008

– MGMT and any other disco revival bullshit especially dance parties and hardcore kids thinking it’s cool.
– Missing the A7 reunion.
– Coming to terms with the fact that kids will consistently freak out over bands that just aren’t that good.
– Being sucked into the vortex that is the B9board.
– People neglecting Hits and Misses.

TOP 5 THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2009

– The Burning Fight Book.
– Toronto’s Young Hardcore Bands getting better.
– Doing some HUGE shows and putting The Clubhouse, Toronto’s own DIY venue, on the map.
– A Stuck in the City print zine, friends starting up zines and zines in general.
– The Schizophrenic Records Toronto Omnibus Comp #2.

See you in 2009. If you’re young and you willingly skip the Career Suicide show on the 9th, you should stop going to shows.
